Our mission, at Aveda, is to care for the world we live in…

We live out the Aveda mission year round, but every April the mission really comes to life when we fundraise to support clean water. 2016 marks the 10th year that Aveda has focused their Earth Month efforts on clean water projects, raising over $38 million in that time period!

This year, Beehive’s goal is to raise $3000 for Earth Month. Every year we look for exciting ways to raise the money and this year we were thrilled to be a part of Wichita’s first ever Aveda Catwalk for Clean Water Trashion Show! Yes, I said trashion, not fashion! All models entered were required to wear outfits made completely out of recycled material!

We selected our design team in February that consisted of our stylists Ashley, Jazmin, Laura, and Shanna. Here is what they had to say about the inspiration for their design:

“The heart of our inspiration was the very first line in Aveda’s mission; To care for the world we live in. We wanted our theme to tell the story of this region’s first stewards of the land, the Keepers of the Plains. Now being partnered with Audubon, we have an opportunity to follow in their footsteps. Our model represents a strong, natural female who is beautiful inside and out.”

They worked countless hours designing and constructing the outfit. It was really important to them to stay Aveda mission aligned so they chose materials that were plentiful in our salon. Using the brown packing paper we receive with every Aveda order, they cut over 1500 6X3 inch pieces. They were then folded and connected into chains. The chains were then sewn together with over 400 feet of sustainable hemp thread. The wings were cut from cardboard from one of our shipment boxes and then covered in Aveda color tubes that had been cut, cleaned, and then cut into the feather shape. More brown shipment paper was cut and folded into fans to cover the inside of the wings and back of the dress. Leftover Aveda holiday ribbon was used to tie the wings together. Her crown and jewelry were made from more of the paper chains as well as the clean color tubes cut into feathers and some were hole punched to create sequins!

Catwalk Model

It was truly a labor of love and the whole team had a great time pitching in to get all of the work done!

The show was held at the beautiful Noah’s Event Venue and 14 Aveda Salons in the Wichita area entered models. All of the designs were breathtaking! It is amazing what can be made out of “trash”! We were up against some awesome competition and we are so excited to announce that our model won the Fan Favorite award!

We are so proud to be a part of the Aveda network and we look forward to this show becoming an annual event in Wichita!

Fundraising will continue through the end of April and there’s still ways you can help us reach our goal!
